Rice and curry is THE Sri Lankan meal and here's our top choices for having some in Colombo.
Udumbara JU Caterers is one of our favourite rice and curry places in Colombo. The food is amazeballs with buth kade prices.
Mythi's is a great place to grab rice and curry. These guys absolutely stuff the plate so it's well worth the money. They used to do one of the best black pork curries we’ve come across. Unfortunately, they’re not making that delicacy anymore.
Going strong for 68 years, Buth Amma's Buth Kade is the most charming hole-in-the-wall rice and curry place in Bamba.
Praneetha is an extremely popular little hole-in-the-wall opposite the Beira Lake, that serves up rice and curry with the option of almost every kind of meat.
Mithuro Cafe is a really good one down Duplication Road. Besides rice and curry they also serve a whole bunch of very peppery, spicy short eats, and kottu in the evenings.
The basic Yarl meal (for lunch) is rice on a banana leaf with three veg sides that they ladle onto your plate - usually parippu, a sort of sambar and something else. On top of this, they also give you a metal bowl with your choice of meat sides.
We have gushed about the crab at Mayura Hotel but the rice and curry in this little Pettah street-side stopover is also very, very good.
This bustling spot on Fife road runs out of Rice and Curry pretty fast. So you've got to be quick if you want your buth.
Curry Pot is a well-kept, nourishing, and spacious rice-and-curry joint down Marine Drive in Colpetty. It doesn't disappoint and is, as most buth kadeys, quite popular amongst the office crowd and few college students in the area.
Upali's is a great place to get tasty, affordable Sri Lankan food. It's incredibly busy these days, so reservations come recommended.
A rather comfortable and pleasant setting to enjoy your dose of rice & curry for a decent price. Even though they get a bit crowded during lunchtime, their service remains efficient, or you can easily take away.
Every dish they have are vegetarian and organic. Served on top of nelum kola, you won't miss your meats here. Plus, it adds up to the whole eco-friendly vibe that they have going on.
A streetside rice & curry spot that is always buzzing with customers. They do a well-known, rather delicious, melt-in-the-mouth pork curry with a gravy that you can pair with anything.
Somewhat of an oasis amidst the concrete desert, this place serves up well-presented and flavourful rice & curry. Their staff is excellent in their conduct and professionalism. Also, we think their fruit juices are some of the best in town.
Sort of a hidden gem of a resto in Colombo-Fort with tasteful rice & curry. They have a good ambience with an impressive focus on hygiene. Their portions are ample (7 curries to accompany your plate of buth), and you can totally get your money’s worth here.
They are a small buth kadey that captures the gamey vibe. Their portions are generous for the prices but have room to improve. We found the fried chicken rice paired with the mango curry deserves praise for its well-balanced flavours.
While not the most extravagant in terms of ambience, they offer rather affordable buth packets wrapped in banana leaves. Keeping in line with the Lankan style you will find a large portion of rice packed in here.
