Arabian Knights

379, Galle Road, Kollupitiya, Colombo 03

After an initial hiccup, Arabian Knights has bounced back well. The food is nearly back to their former glory, and coupled with the new venue, things are looking up again.

Arabian Knights has been upholding their reputation as the city’s Arabic food hub for almost a decade now. In recent years, many new similar establishments have emerged, but Arabian Knights has been tackling this competition quite well — with new branches and consistently good, affordably priced, authentic Arabic food.

Here’s what we experienced during our recent visit.

Food & Drinks

The menu has been added with a bunch of new items, including a Royal Sahan packed with meats and flavour, while the classics still shine.

Our starter was a portion of Cheese Sambousek. Four well-made sambouseks arrived in this one, with two dipping sauces - ketchup and mustard mayo. So crispy to the bite, they were oozing out with gooey cheese and herbs. What a great way to kickstart a meal!

We assure you, this is the smokiest rice in Colombo. Aromatic, fluffy and packed with herbs and spices, you can sniff that smokiness from miles away. It was further enhanced by the chicken, which had a fine red hue, and the perfect touch from the grill. The side salad was simple, with just some crushed papadum and lettuce, while the gravy had a nice spicy kick to boot. Squeeze up the lime wedge for the extra flavour.

The Chicken Shawarma Plate was served with a side of French fries, salad, and two dipping sauces. Packed to its brim with fat chunks of juicy chicken and veggies, the shawarma had this well-balanced out sweet and savoury flavour combination. The bread was quite thin, and did a good job in holding that rich filling together without getting all soggy.

To satiate our sweet tooth, we ordered a Muhalabia. Presenting an enticing whiff of rose essence, it was milky, had a super silky texture, and a good sprinkle of pistachio scattered about.

We decided to wash everything down with a pot of Moroccan Mint Tea. Served warm, it was refreshing, all thanks to the lovely minty note.

Ambience & Service

The restaurant has a orange-yellow theme interior, coupled with middle eastern themed arches, some artsy metallic ceiling lamps, and blue cushioned furniture. It’s quite cosy and tends to get packed with customers during lunchtime. The staff was prompt, friendly and welcoming.

Conclusion

Even after all these years, Arabian Knights remains a solid bet at authentic Arabic fare. It’s a good lunch/ dinner option that one can always taste some delicious flavours, without having to worry too much about the cost.

We revisted Arabian Knights.

After all these years, Arabian Knights seem to be doing pretty well, and going strong.

Arabian Knights has long been one of Colombo's Middle Eastern staples, with reasonable prices and strong flavours.

After an initial hiccup, Arabian Knights has bounced back well. The food is nearly back to their former glory, and coupled with the new venue, things are looking up again.

So Arabian Knights has just moved from their small but popular eatery at Marine Drive to a proper restaurant in Kollupitiya Galle Road. It's an awesome place to hang out at, but the food was bit disappointing judging by their old Marine Drive standards.

Arabian Knights is a new and absolutely charming Syrian restaurant right by the sea. It only has about four seats and is more a takeaway joint, but if you walk in you'll be glad you did. Everybody there is quite charming (I said it twice cause it's true) and you can taste that they've put love and care into the food.
