Colombo has been home to a lot of awesome home-bakers for a while now, but Bakes by Bella's Melissa is a home-baker that does more than your average cakes and cupcakes. Besides regular baked goodies, there's an interesting range of stuff on her menu, including biskies (soft cookie with buttercream filling), jars (a glass jar of layered cake and cream), mini-cupcakes and mini-brownies.
Colombo has been home to plenty of awesome home-bakers for a while now, but Bakes by Bella does more than your average cakes and cupcakes. Besides regular baked goodies, there's an interesting range of stuff on her menu, including biskies (soft cookie with buttercream filling), jars (a glass jar of layered cake and cream), mini-cupcakes and mini-brownies.
We got chocolate fudge mini-cupcakes (minimum order 6, Rs. 80 each). These make some very cool finger food at a party, and like in much of her work, a lot of the charm is in the presentation itself. The icing had little pearls of hard icing in it and the cake was delightfully fudgey and soft. You'll want to get these in bulk because they're going to vanish in a few seconds.
Biskies are apparently a relatively new idea in the baking world. We got vanilla biskies (Rs. 130 each) which we have to say is a tad pricey for the size - they're about the same size as the mini-cupcakes. But the good thing is there is no minimum order for biskies, so you don't feel like you're being forced to pay a lot since you can pick how many you want. They were tasty though, with sweet icing lodged between thick fresh biscuit.
Bakes by Bella does a range of creative variations of cookies (caramel, cranberry, raisin & oats, to name a few), and we got her M&M chocolate chip cookies (minimum order 15, Rs. 100 each). This is completely worth it. The cookies are kind of big, rough and fudgey, but it's those giant peanut flavour M&Ms that really did it - this is a dream for cookie enthusiasts and kids especially.
We left the best for last. The jars. Candy Cakes and The Sweet Tooth also does jars, so this brownies & cream jar remains a classic combo. Personally I've tried the brownie jars by all three and Bella is my favourite (though pricier at Rs. 800) - the stuff seems fluffier and blends together better somehow. If you've never had a brownie and cream jar, it's amazing: soft chocolatey brownie cake, lodged between plenty of delicious cream, and topped off with sliced strawberries. It's an awesome dessert to pick at with a spoon (all you spoon-in-the-nutella-jar people will appreciate this). You can also get mini red velvet or rainbow jars at Rs. 450, and the 'cookie cake mountain with M&Ms' jar sounds like fun.
You'll find the turn-off to Buthgamuwa Road off the main road on your left (if you're heading towards Battaramulla), just after the Welikada Police Station and before Pizza Hut. Drive in and turn left just after passing the bridge, Fairmount is at the end of this lane.
