Breeze Bar (Cinnamon Grand)

77 Galle Road, Colombo 3

Breeze Bar at Cinnamon Grand is one of Colombo's most popular poolside bars, and it's a great place to chill with some friends. The food is good, but the drinks are pricier than most other places.

Breeze Bar is one of Colombo's quieter, more expensive drinking establishments. Located at the fancy Cinnamon Grand, you can expect both good service and good drinks here. It's both a poolside bar - ideal for snacking and sipping at between dips - and a, well, normal drinking bar. Breeze isn't cheap, but it's a nice place.

The chairs inside, however, are strangely low and can make you feel like a diminutive Alice struggling to reach over for some biscuits. It's true, the table almost comes up to my shoulders. But while the seating isn't ideal, the setting is. Breeze Bar's main selling point is its proximity to the prettily lit Cinnamon Grand swimming pool. Located at the far corner of the hotel, Breeze is snugly nestled amidst a leafy grove of trees, opening out next to the shimmery turquoise pool. It's really quite beautiful here at night.

In terms of prices, well, Breeze Bar's part of a five star hotel so it isn't going to be cheap. However, it's also not extortionate and they've got a good selection of cocktails and spirits. All cocktails are around Rs. 750, a large Lion's about Rs. 360 (have a look at our Lion Index for more on the price of beer across the city) and a Pimms and sprite (50ml Pimms), surprisingly, costs just Rs. 410. We didn't try any of the food, but it's likely to be good. Cinnamon Grand fare rarely disappoints.

If you're expecting a more lively ambience or buzz, however, this may not be the venue for you. Breeze Bar is generally a quiet, relaxed place for an evening drink, more often frequented by the hotel's guests than by outside visitors. It can get busy sometimes - apparently they have a not so great live band on Fridays and Saturdays - but not often. It's Sugar Bistro, Colombo Courtyard and both the Brewery and Floor by O! that are currently at the crest of today's trendy drinking dens.

Still, on Fridays and Saturdays Breeze stays open til 2 AM, which isn't bad for a Colombo bar. You're not likely to run into everyone you know within the space of a couple of hours and they seem to understand the concept of background music - although apparently only on weekdays. If you want to party, Breeze might not be the place for you, but if you enjoy hearing your conversations (although again, only on weekdays) while sipping on whatever it is you're sipping, Breeze is good. And again, it's really, really pretty at night.

Go during happy hour or you may cringe a bit when you get the bill.
