Butter Boutique

70 Rosmead Pl, Colombo 07

Butter Boutique has moved now! They're officially setting up shop at Rosmead Place so we went to check them out.

Butter Boutique's finally got their own place away from the Good Market. They've really stepped their game up. The cakes and dessert are excellent, but the real surprise is the coffee. We'd go so far as to say it's arguably the best cuppa in Colombo right now.

The Cakes & Desserts

Butter Boutique has been a mainstay at The Good Market for over two years now, so it's no surprise to see them finally open up their own place in Colombo. It's a small space but they offer an impressive variety of cakes and desserts that stray from the usual bakeries.

They don't really have a menu, and there's a bunch of stuff available that isn't on display so be sure to ask. Prices are a bit high with slices ranging from Rs. 350 - Rs. 500, but these were pretty substantial slices so I didn't find myself dwelling on it.

We started off with the salted caramel cake (Rs. 390) which is a layered butter cake with a mix of buttercream frosting and salted caramel. Striking a good balance between sweet and salty is key here, and this cake does just that. The cake itself wasn't too sweet, most of the flavor interplay takes place between the buttercream and caramel combo.

The tres leches cake (Rs. 400) is in our opinion a must-try at Butter Boutique. It's a cake soaked in three kinds of milks (traditionally: condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream) topped with a thick layer of lightly sweetened whipped cream. The cake itself has a unique texture which is more airy than a butter cake but slightly denser than a sponge. This is important since it means the cake stays moist without getting soggy and falling apart. The creamy, moist cake along with the smooth richness of the whipped cream makes for one of the best cakes around town. This also works great with their coffee (more on that in a bit).

The affogato (Rs. 600) incorporates BB's homemade ice cream with a shot of their excellent espresso. This is usually served with plain vanilla ice cream but we had it with vanilla-chocolate chip. Personally, I found that the chocolate worked quite well with the espresso. This is the perfect dessert for coffee lovers since you get to decide just how much espresso goes in the ice cream. They serve the two separately so you pour the warm espresso over the ice cream which gives it that contrast of temperature that we love. Their ice cream was also notably creamier and smoother than the mainstream brands which makes this a great choice overall.

The Coffee

Butter boutique was always known for their cakes but what we didn't quite expect was for them to serve up some the best coffee in town. They've spared no expense bringing down a La Marzocco coffee machine, Niccolo coffee from Melbourne and a renowned barista named Davide Drummond.

He's here till the 7th of December both preparing the coffee and training the staff. In my hour or so at BB I learned quite a bit just chatting with him (really nice guy). He explained that Niccolo is used specifically since it's an Arabica blend with a mix of Brazilian, Guatemalan and Indian beans, each adding its own distinct flavor to the mix. It's a lot less bitter than single origin coffees, with light nutty and cocoa undertones and a crema with a reddish brown hue. He also emphasized that foreign coffee should be air freighted and served within three weeks; when the coffee is at its freshest.

Again, it isn't cheap with the prices ranging from Rs. 250 for a shot of espresso, going up to around Rs. 500 for the others, but like we said, probably the best in town right now.

I went with the latte (Rs. 450) since I like my coffee with milk, but Davide insisted that I try the Magic as well. The latte was excellent; adequately creamy, not bitter at all, with a good ratio of milk to espresso so that the crema rises to the top with the milk. Most importantly the milk didn't dull the intensity of the espresso which happens so often at other coffee shops. Oh and the presentation makes it that much more enticing.

The Magic is sort of an Australian take on a flat white. If I'm not mistaken, it's steamed milk poured over a double ristretto. The difference being that it's got a higher ratio of coffee to milk making it stronger than the latte, really highlighting the flavour of the Niccolo coffee. It's a brilliant change up since it still retains that richness of the milk, so I'll likely be picking this over the latte the next time.

Here's Davide doing his thing.

Ambience & Service

Butter Boutique is a pretty tiny space with seating for around ten, so most folks just get their stuff to go. Small as it may be, they’ve done a great job with the decor. We’re not sure if it was their intention, but it actually looks like the inside of a doll house. It’s mostly a white interior with pink accents to along with their logo.

Since mostly everything is pre-made, the service is zippy so you won’t find yourself sitting around cakeless for too long. What’s interesting though is that they’ve got around five waiters, which is quite a lot for such a small spot.

Conclusion

Butter Boutique's new outlet is a great addition to Colombo's baking scene. I don't think anyone really saw it coming, but they've raised bar for coffee in town as well. Whether you're a fan of coffee or desserts, BB is more than worth a visit.

TIP

They've got a bunch of ice creams which aren't on display so ask and ye shall receive.

Butter Boutique is a place I hangout often after school and most have gotten it right when saying that they are overpriced. But they have quite a variety, and if it’s your first visit you might actually get a bit overwhelmed. On the plus side you can almost never finish a slice of cake (usually clocks around 600 bucks) on your own with the exception of cheesecake. Honestly in my opinion 580 bucks for a measly slice of cheesecake is…. Idk what to say.
Take my advice, you are better off walking a few meters further and having Caramel Pumpkins’ cheesecake.
Coffee isn’t that bad with the exception of last week. Me and my friend ordered iced caramel coffee as I vaguely remember (apologies if I’ve gotten the name wrong) and to my great disappointment I did not taste a hint of caramel ☹
It is usually quiet inside the café and I would personally prefer more lighting but the setting is okayish.
Tip- Never go ask for the Golden Oreo cuz every time their answer would be no

Excellent coffee and really good cake. Don't forget to try their tres leches and the iced espresso. Their Matcha Latte is quite good too. You can't go wrong with most of their options.
