Kim's Kitchen

755 New Parliament Road, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Battaramulla

Vietnamese food with a super authentic touch.

Vietnamese food is hard to come by in Colombo, which is why Kim's Kitchen is a welcome addition. Located down Parliament Road in Battaramulla, their food is cooked by a Vietnamese chef, has a very authentic touch to it, and tastes quite amazing.

Our starter was this plate of Meat Wrapped In Piper Lalot (Rs. 450). According to the host, Piper Lalot is pretty much like the Betal leaf, which is being used in Vietnamese cuisine as a flavouring wrap. When properly heated, these leaves release an incense-like fragrance, along with a sweetly spicy kick, which enhances the flavour of the meat it had been wrapped with.

We loved it. The rolls of chicken were wonderfully soft and juicy, while the Piper Lalot works its magic. A light appetiser to kickstart your meal.

The Kim's Special Mix Flat Noodle Soup (Rs. 980) is a warm hug that takes the shape of a pho. Made with a tangle of flat noodles, slices of beef and herbs, the broth here is super light, and carried lots and lots of salty, savoury and umami flavour notes. Add a splash of lime for the extra flavour.
The Grilled Chicken Rice (Rs. 850) was simple, but had a lot of flavours to boot. Perfectly marinated and nicely grilled, the chicken had a lovely crisp on its outside, while the inside was juicy and tender. There was a tinge of smokiness in the flavour, which we really enjoyed. The egg was done well, the accompanying veggies were fresh, and the sauce it comes with has a spicy, limey zest. Superb!

As per our request, the chef recommended these two drinks - the Vietnamese Iced Coffee (Rs. 480) and Lemongrass Iced Tea (Rs. 380).

It's always summer in Colombo and this Vietnamese Iced Coffee is one brilliant way to beat the scorching heat. Dark roast coffee, condensed milk, water and ice cubes jiggling inside a tall glass, it's hella refreshing and addictive.

Sweet with a subtle lemongrass-y hint, the Lemongrass Iced Tea was great too.

Ambience & Service

With wooden tables, benches and potted ferns hanging from the ceiling, the interior here is quite simple and pretty. Coupled with the well-versed, friendly and helpful service, it has everything to make your dining experience a pleasant one.

We're quite happy about our experience at Kim's Kitchen. Their food is incredible, the prices are not too harsh, and served with a lot of smiles. Definitely a place that one should not miss, especially if you're a lover of pho!
