Long Feng (Cinnamon Lakeside)

Long Feng has good service, but the food just doesn't push it far enough. It's fairly average Chinese, and within this hotel it should be more.

Long Feng, located at the Cinnamon Lakeside, is one of the city's few high end Chinese restaurants. The food, however, is merely decent.

Long Feng used to be located where Seven Degrees is now, overlooking the Beira Lake. Now it's moved back into a more modest abode. The food, also, no longer really impresses. It's quite passable Chinese, but it's not exceptional.

The Food

Dim Sum Dim Sum

Long Feng does Dim Sum as well as Chinese a la carte and we tried a variety of things. The Dim Sum is a set menu which covers a few courses, people at our table had varieties that cost around Rs. 2,000. The Dim Sum was unremarkable. Three tiers of dumplings, but nothing that exciting.

We also tried a range of a la carte options - Hot And Sour Soup (Rs. 450, quite good), Egg Fried Rice (Rs. 850, okay), Fried Tofu (Rs. 530, not bad), Fried Green Beans (Rs. 360, fine), Steamed Belly Pork (Rs. 1,480, pretty good) and the Sizzling Beef (Rs. 780, okay). As you can see from the brief parenthetical reviews, the food is fine but not great, at least by our sampling.

The Hot And Sour soup was good, thick and tart, better than our experience at the Kingsbury's Yue Chuan. Besides that, however, nothing really soared above a level you'd get at more regular Chinese restaurants like Min Han or 88. On the plus side, Long Feng has the sameish prices, but we were hoping they'd push Chinese food into more of a fine dining scene.

Their veg options are pretty good and affordable and the Steamed Belly Pork, albeit mad expensive, was melty and good, if you like that sort of thing. Most of the options, however, were basically average and a bit oily in their after effects.

The Service

The service was quite good. We ordered some dumplings they didn't have and they gave us an alternate selection for free. Props. These little gestures make the difference between a good experience and a bad one and we commend them.

The newer Long Feng is actually a bit small and simple. They have nice rotating Lazy Susan's in the center of the tables and the finishes are good, but it still has basic tile floors and an average ambiance.

Long Feng has good service, not ridiculous prices, but the food just doesn't push it far enough. It's fairly average Chinese, and within this hotel it should be more.

From Slave Island, take Malay Street past the roundabout to the Cinnamon Lakeside on your right. They have valet or parking below. Long Feng is through the lobby, to the left and out back, just before the pool.
