Mathura Restaurant

16, Melbourne Avenue, Colombo 04

Mathura is a decent Indian vegetarian restaurant that has been around Colombo for years, but now at a new location.

Mathura is no longer at Havelock Road. They're now at 16, Melbourne Avenue, Colombo 04.

Mathura is a long-established pure veg spot in Havelock Town. It is, however, pretty expensive for average quality South Indian fare.

The Food

Mathura is a South Indian spot and thus specializes in dosa/dhose, other flatbreads, rice and assorted vegetable preparations. The base meal here is a dose, sambar, chutneys and whatever veg you want to pair it with.

When this combination works it works really well, but it's sorta unappetizing looking and when it's mediocre it's just depressing. We've had good experiences at Mathura, but not especially this time around. We tried an onion dosa (Rs. 225), something we've really enjoyed in Jaffna, but here it was just OK. The onion wasn't caramelized, it was just kind tossed in there.

Same for the paper dhose. It was good, but these are more expensive than your kade paper dhoses (Rs. 225, basically a whole meal on the street) and they're not better. The potato masala inside was kinda phoned in, not much flavor and just there.

To mix it up we tried one of their signature dishes, the cauliflower Gobi 65 (Rs. 450). A take on the Indian classic chicken 65, it matches the bright color but if anything the flavor of the cauliflower was buried by the heavy breading. It was served with some limp salad and ketchup.

We also tried the butter masala paneer (Rs. 450), which was alright tasting but had only six or seven pieces of paneer in there. At more than Rs. 50 a bite we wouldn't call it good value for money.

Stuff we tried to order that they didn't have were the tomato soup, filter coffee and any naan or tandoori items (they apparently only serve that at dinner).

The total for two came to Rs. 1,500, with bottled water and a Nescafe.

The Location

Mathura has been around forever, it's kinda a Colombo classic. It's a step up from the roadside pure veg eateries and below a more posh place like Shanmugas. When we went it was a bit dark and the fact that it hasn't changed in forever is starting to show.

The Service

The staff are nice here and you get pretty prompt service. They didn't understand our coffee order and had to come back a few times, but beyond that the service is fine.

One of Colombo's oldest South Indian restaurants, Mathura serves reliable pure-veg fare in a middle-class environment. You can, however, get better quality if you're willing to eat in more working class settings or pay a bit more elsewhere.
