Comprised of a range of topped toasts, croffles (where croissant meets waffle), desserts, munchies, and a bunch of mains, the food menu at Plus Nine Four caters to a diverse group of appetites - veg, non-veg, and vegan.
Clocking in at Rs. 1000, our toast featured a slice of lightly toasted sourdough bread, topped off with a heap of tempered pol sambol, a generous layer of bacon (chicken bacon option is available too), perfectly made poached egg and a good drizzle of herbed hollandaise sauce.
Plus Nine Four purchases their bread from bread.lk, and this sourdough was wonderful. Giving off a delightful crisp, it was a bit tough around the edges, but rightly so, and not in a manner where you'd have to put all your upper body strength to pull out the knife you jabbed it with. With a soft middle, it had a lovely swirl of sourness to taste.
The flavour combination here was brilliant. A little heat from the pol sambol, and a rich, lemony note from the hollandaise sauce while the bacon making that smokey, salty and meaty party in your mouth. With sumptuously runny yolk pouring into the mix, it's basically a flavour explosion that you'd guarantee to love.
Mac & Cheese is a simple dish, which is why it's one of the best things that you can do with macaroni and cheese. Plus Nine Four's take on this delicacy is simply a bowlful of happiness.
For Rs. 850, it's gooey, incredibly cheesy, and served warm with a pinch of chilli powder on top. This is their adult portion, which is why you are seeing pieces of chewy mushrooms scattered about (the kid's portion comes without it). The sharp cheesy flavours it boasts, are drawn from the generous use of mozzarella and parmesan. This is one of the safest bets at Plus Nine Four, if you're a vegetarian.
Their drinks section features an assortment of Peekoh Tea, juices, shakes and of course, coffee, fueled by Soul Coffee.
Out of the Peekoh Tea range, we picked the Blend 01 (Rs. 400) - a concoction of Elderberry with hints of strawberry and raspberry that leaves a superb minty aftertaste on your palate. Intensified with the floral, acidic and slightly citrusy Nuwara Eliya tea, this is, without a doubt, the most refreshing cuppa I've ever tasted. An expensive one at that too, but we didn't mind as the flavour was quite satisfactory.
Colombo has a ton of coffee spots, but there's only a few who care to craft up a good cup of coffee. Luckily, Plus Nine Four is one of them, and they nailed this Cappuccino.
The crown of airy, microfoam comes with a simple coffee art, and what's underneath that was the perfectly heated milk, saving its velvety texture. Carrying a potent caffeine punch is a highlight of any good cappuccino, and this one delivered it as well. We received the double shot version, and therefore it could be a bit overwhelming for someone who's not used to drinking coffee. So, add a spoonful of brown sugar to dial it down a little bit.
I'm a sucker for Plus Nine Four's Coffee Caramel Ice Cream Tart. It's one of my favourite desserts in the city, but this time I went with the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie (Rs. 300) because, A) I was quite full after my meal, and B) my lunch partner was suffering from a severe cold.
Dusted with icing sugar, this cookie was buttery, deliciously chewy, tender and well-loaded with chocolate chips, while providing a nice crunch to the bite. We loved it.
This picture was taken a year ago. It was raining cat and dogs on the day we visited here this time, so the whole alfresco setting was gone. They happily accommodated all of their customers inside the cafe, until the rain stops. It was a bit congested but still had that magically soothing vibe. You can dive into a good book while you're here, or get some work done by plugging in your laptop, as you enjoy your food and drinks.
The place was packed with customers, but the friendly staff managed to bring our food within around 15 - 20 minutes. Quite impressive.
New cafes are blooming in every corner of the city, but Plus Nine Four has been able to become quite the competitor among them by providing delicious food, fine coffee, and the pleasant ambience coupled with welcoming service - which is pretty much everything that anyone would look for in a good cafe. It's quite nice to see how they've grown over the past year or so, without letting their standards down. We highly recommend.
Plus Nine Four is one of the best places in the city if you prefer a meal in the most peaceful ambience.
Plus Nine Four is definitely someplace that you should check out.
