Ramani’s is a nice place and a good salon. It won't give you for money, but they're reliable and probably won’t ruin your hair. The staff – at the Nugegoda branch at least – are lovely. They haven’t changed in years, they remember all their clients and they’re just really, really sweet and friendly.

Ramani Fernando is an established Colombo stalwart, and her business probably makes up the island's biggest chain of salons. They've got eight locations at Elibank Road (the first salon, run from her residence), Taj Samudra Hotel, Hilton Colombo, Lucky Plaza, Cinnamon Grand, Union Place, Kohuwala, World Trade Centre, Mount Lavinia, Negombo, and Kandy, as well as a couple of franchise salons in Bangladesh and India.

Ramani's has been around for a couple of decades at the very least, and has a stream of dedicated regular patrons. There are a lot of locations and stylists however, so you may want to get a stylist recommendation from a friend. For example, I've been to Ramani's about 10 times, 7 times of which I had an alright experience, just a basic blow dry and iron. The other three times, I attempted a trim/ hair cut and it ended in disaster. I have very curly hair, which needs a bit more than a bowl cut strategy, so I was pretty miserable.

However, I went back on a friend's recommendation (who also has curls), and she sent me to her long-term stylist Janaka at Taj, who did a fab job and gave me a discount. Overall, I'm now pretty happy whenever I need a trim and a blow out. So basically - get a recommendation, or just keep experimenting until you find your man.

Apart from hair services, they do a whole plethora of things from eyebrows to sari draping. But this is dependent on the branch, so call ahead.

You can expect a clean environment, filled with the chatter of Colombo 7 dowagers and teenagers on the phone. Most branches have the same pop on the radio, A/C cranked up, and bustling staff. It isn't particularly aesthetically pleasing (like for example, Crown, Kess, or Jaal), but it's nice enough.

Stylists and services have different hierarchies of prices, so you need to check properly in advance. It's also dependent on the health and length of your hair. Either way, it's going to be pretty pricey. You can expect to pay at least Rs. 3500 to Rs. 4000 for a hair cut and wash, and this increases by about Rs. 500 every couple of years.

Good, standard service if you're going for something simple like a blow dry or getting your hair set. If your hair isn't simple, a hair cut or colour may be best left to a stylist that you know or who has been recommended. On the plus side, there are lots of locations around the city for your convenience.

The opening times differ according to branch so check website for details.
