The Lounge (Cinnamon Lakeside)

115, Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 02

The Lounge is located at the Lakeside lobby and will serve you almost anything from coffee to dessert to sandwiches.

The Lounge is located at the Cinnamon Lakeside lobby and has potential to be a proper aunty-ing spot. You can see who walks in to the hotel, who walks out of the hotel, who's rushing to the loo and who's serving too much dessert at The Dining Room

Food and Drinks

The menu is a mix of food including sandwiches, pastas, burgers, salads, soups, and hot and cold beverages.

The Iced Mocha (Rs. 360) had a good balance of coffee and chocolate. On a typical Colombo day this served well as a thirst quencher and heat buster.

THE WHIPPED CREAM HAD NOT BEEN WHIPPED ENOUGH. The hell, Lakeside? You don't top drinks with whipped cream that's weaker than my body!

For pastas, you can select your choice of sauce and pasta. I chose Penne Romana (a reasonable Rs. 750). The pasta is served al dente, and sauce-wise, The Lounge has it under control. With generous amounts of chicken and bits of portobello mushroom, the pasta was creamy with a strong garlic flavour coming through.

The Nasi Goreng (also Rs. 750) came with two chicken satays, a drumstick, a grilled prawn and a fried egg. And prawn crackers that didn't crack but felt like they had been fried 10 days ago. The rice was your average tasty, spicy nasi accompanied by little bits of chicken saying "hello" with every 5th mouthful. Without the sweet yet tangy peanut sauce, the satays tasted rather bland. The drumstick, in contrast, was seasoned well, but didn't have a distinct taste, and the grilled prawn didn't wow me once unshelled.

In their own elements, the accompaniments of the nasi tasted okay, but when combined, the Nasi Goreng made a satisfying meal sans the dead prawn crackers.

Their desserts, generally, look very aesthetically pleasing. At Rs. 690, this tiramisu could have been creamier. While it did taste strongly of coffee with a thin layer of chocolate cake instead of the traditionally used ladyfingers, it wasn't something I would order again solely because of the lack of the creamy texture. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't great.

Service and Ambience

Service here is nice and friendly.

It took us a while to be attended to, but once we were recognised as potential aunties, service was topnotch. We were attended to by a very cordial young man, Charith, who had a smile plastered on his face - one that didn't make you go "oh, no pervy smile!" but made you go, "aww, thanks for the water!"

The Lounge is right at the center. You walk in to Lakeside and you see the lounge. You climb up from the basement and you're at The Lounge. You simply cannot escape The Lounge. So don't meet your secret girlfriends/boyfriends/sidechicks/tinder dates here.

This spot has got a very relaxing air to it. When I was here a couple of weeks ago, I saw two old couples play cards here. Very loungey.

What sets The Lounge apart from most places is the ambience. If you're tired of failing at being the centre of attention, you could consider being at a place that is the centre of something.

With relatively reasonable prcies, it's a good spot to unwind over a meal or a drink, but not so good if you expect a lot out of whipped cream and prawn crackers.
