The VoV Coffee Lounge

30/81A Longdon place, Malalasekara Mawatha, Colombo 00700

The VoV Coffee Lounge is a little eatery situated at Malalasekara Mawatha that serves up 100% vegan food. They're fairly priced, the food is tasty and their burgers are sure to satisfy.

Here in Sri Lanka, you don't really come across that many vegan restaurants apart from those that serve Indian fare; in which case they have an arsenal of colourful, delicious varieties of food and various renditions of it, that serve exciting vegan food. You might be appalled at the fact that the word "exciting" and "vegan" were used in the same sentence and that too consecutively!

But VoV adds an entirely new realm of taste to the concept of vegan, and their food is equally relishing (perhaps even more!) than their non-vegan counterparts.

The Food

VoV has a range of burgers, meals and also a seperate menu for pizzas, and they're all vegan. How is it possible to recreate the exact same tastes using almost the same ingredients? That's what we wanted to find out.

We opted for the Large Super Supreme Pizza (Rs. 1650), the Pasta Bolognese (Rs. 800) and the Silverstone Burger (Rs. 800).

What we found different about this burger was rather than the patty, they had a filling! Biting into it, expecting a solid patty would take you by surprise as your teeth would slide through the filling described as the patty. That being said, the filling was quite amazing and the texture was sort of similar to that of the bolognese (to which we will come in a moment). The wedges that came with it was sort of hollow and airy, allowing a lot of oil to be absorbed by each of the chips. Fresh tomatoes and lettuce in the burger made it that much better.

The pasta was properly boiled to the perfect amount and did not feel bland even without the bolognese, which we found lovely. The bolognese, essentially being a meat sauce, tasted very similar to the actual bolognese. Our guess was they'd used soya, chickpeas and kidney beans, but it did not for a minute taste like any of the ingredients. We also felt like there was a slight marmite tinge to it, which was perfect.

The Super Supreme Pizza, 12 inches, came with mushrooms, soy and tofu adorning the soft surface. Considering the fact that it was all made without an iota of meat, the pizza had ample flavour to make us devour it in one go. We were a tad bit disappointed by the size for the large pizza though, but all in all, quite filling and satisfying.

For the drinks, we opted for the Choco Milkshake (Rs. 500) and the Iced Tea (Rs. 300).

The Chocolate Milkshake was made of soy milk and had a slightly grainy texture to it. The milkshake in itself properly encapsulated the chocolatey taste, but also gave an earthy taste to it, and was quite filling.

The Lemon Iced Tea was the perfect amount of sweetness and flavour, and it was a very pleasant drink. Blocks of hollow ice, lemon and the unorthodox glass it came in all added to the aesthetic of the drink.

Service and Ambience

The restaurant in itself is attached to a house, and has been transformed into a cosy space where you can have some great food and just hang out. They've got a bookshelf taking up a corner, that has a small but interesting collection of books and also an outdoor space with a collection of quirky tables and chairs.

The staff are quite friendly accommodating and are only too eager to explain the specifics of the vegan dish and recommend to us the dishes we are most likely to enjoy.

Conclusion

If you're environment conscious (which you should be!) and you're looking forward to taking that giant leap towards staying vegan, or you just want to try something different, or if you're vegan due to your religion or ethics, you can try out the food at VoV and see how it goes!

TIP

Ask for their menu, there's more to it than the simple list of burgers on the wall.

If I could give seven stars I would have given these extremely talented team of culinary experts. Value for money is 7 stars. Service is 7 stars. And any one who want extremely healthy food, amazingly sans meat but with meat mimics this is the place to order from. They make mock meat dishes that embarrass even the reputed steak chefs in Sri Lanka. Attention to detail is super. Please try them at least once. Mainly take away is enabled during covid outbreak via uber eats.
