How To Make Milk Toffees (UYAMU)

Whether it's Avurudu or not, kiri toffee is one of Sri Lanka's best loved sweets.

Serving: 30 toffees


  • Sugar (Powdered Sugar, Not Icing Sugar) - 220g
  • Condensed Milk / Milkmaid - 1 large tin / 395g
  • Butter - 2 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts - 50g
  • Vanilla Extract - 1 tbsp


  1. Put a deep pan or pot on the stove
  2. Add the Milkmaid/ condensed milk
  3. Add sugar
  4. Add butter
  5. Stir and let boil
  6. Add cashew nuts
  7. Add vanilla
  8. Constantly stir till the batter gets dark, thick and sticky, but don't let it get too hard (this step is crucial)
  9. Pour batter onto a wide buttered tray
  10. Pat it into shape with a flat tool
  11. Leave to cool and harden for 45-60 mins
  12. Cut into cubes and serve
